Getting married in Turkey
Weddings are one of the most memorable and wonderful experiences in our life's. Especially if you choose to get married to that special person abroad, it makes this amazing day even more colourful. In the last years there are more and more couples choosing to get married abroad for different reasons.
This includes ; better climates, cheaper costs and less bureaucracy involved. As your author of this website, I feel it is a must that we cover this topic to help all those wonderful couples who are going to get married here in Turkey. So here it is, your guide to getting married in Turkey.
How to get married in Turkey
Here is what you need to do to get started. This list is prepared by couples who got married in Turkey. For an official document please contact your nearest Turkish Consulate.
Both the Bride and the Groom are from one country
In this case you need a visit to your local council for a ´Certificate to get Married´. The name of this form may vary, but the idea is that this form shows clearly there is nothing in your file that can stop you from getting married. This document must be optimised for international use, so please ask if any extra documentation needed.
If you are already in Turkey, then you need to visit the consulate of your country to get this certificate. Make sure you carry with you your passport and some passport photos with you.
Once you achieve this certificate, then you need to get a translation of this document. If you are in Turkey, the place to go is ´Noter´, they will translate and charge you for this service. Together with this document and your passport then you apply for a date for your wedding at the council (belediye,in Turkish). At this point you will receive another list of documents to complete, which involves health checks at a local hospital etc.
Once all achieved you will pay for an ´international family book´ and carry on with your wedding planning. It might look complicated but once all papers are in place, it is a matter of few days to get everything ready. There are professional companies specialised in wedding planning in Turkey and you can contact us for their details.
Getting married to a Turkish Nationality
All above is still relevant and for the Turkish Nationality, he or she must visit their local council ´Nufus Dairesi´for a ´licence to get married´. They also must have their ´proof of residence in Turkey´from Belediye.
We welcome any comments from couples who have get married in Turkey and will publish them on this page to help others who are planning their wedding.
